What Is The Main Role Of A Mediator?

At Reconciliation and Conflict Resolution / Mediation Center (RCRMC). A mediator’s role is to facilitate a conducive atmosphere´s of communication between the conflicting parties. He is a reconciliatory partner through positive reframing

of each client statement, in other to archive a common ground of understanding. His role is not to impose solutions. Mediators do not advise, nor take sides or render any judgment. Instead, his role is to help and encourage the parties to work out a mutual acceptable resolution by themselves. A mediator must be neutral, impartial and independent.

Who Become A Mediator At RCRMC?

At RCRMC, mediators are trained volunteers from different professional backgrounds including ministers of religious bodies, traditional rulers, chiefs of towns and villages, attorneys, social workers, police force personals, youths and students, managers, executives, doctors, teachers and consultants, and anyone that love to promote peace.

How Does One Become A Mediator At RCRMC?

First, interested candidates are requested to obtain a mediator´s form at Reconciliation and Conflict Resolution / Mediation Center secretariat, which will be filled out by applicants with the endorsement of two reputable reference. Each applicant will attend a six month compulsory mediation training, which will comprise of theory and practical sessions, and exams at the end of the course. Candidates shall be accorded with WCRCI certificate. In addition, there shall be a mandatory mediator´s conference and seminar every three months.

How Confidential Is The Mediation Procedure At RCRMC?

At RCRMC, the conflicting parties cannot be compelled to disclose information that they prefer to keep confidential. But if a party chooses to disclose confidential information or make admissions during mediation proceeding in order to help facilitate a settlement, such information shall remain undisclosed and shall not be provided to anyone outside the context of the mediation. The mediator shall not, without the written authorization of that party, disclose such information or materials to the other party. At Reconciliation and Conflict Resolution / Mediation Center every mediation procedures are confidential. It allows the clients to negotiate and dialogue their issues more openly and productively without fear of exposure.

Mediation is an interest based procedure, and both parties interest factor is highly considered in the conflict resolution, unlike in worldly court proceeding where the outcome of a case is determined by the facts of the conflict and the applicable law. And because mediation is non-binding and confidential, both parties are relax and comfortable to the procedure even when a settlement is not achieved. But experience has proved that mediation does not fail, as both parties are encouraged to suggest an option resolution that can help to meet other opponent interest in the dispute.
